Developmental Editing

You’ve written a first draft. Congratulations! Now it’s time for developmental, or substantive, editing. This type of editing focuses on “big picture stuff”: organization, flow, and content.

How Developmental Editing Works

  • You send me your manuscript. Google Docs or Microsoft Word work just fine.

  • I review the draft and make comments throughout the document on “big picture” things. This is not a line edit. I won’t change mechanical or spelling errors.

  • I send you an editorial letter with a summary of my comments. You will also receive a draft with my comments throughout the manuscript.

  • We chat over Zoom to discuss the suggested edits and how to proceed with the draft. These are just suggestions! Take what resonates with you and leave the rest.
