Developmental Editing

You’ve written a first draft. Congratulations! Now it’s time for developmental, or substantive, editing. This type of editing focuses on “big picture stuff”: organization, flow, and content.

How Developmental Editing Works

    You send me your manuscript. Google Docs or Microsoft Word work just fine.

    I review the draft and make comments throughout the document on “big picture” things. This is not a line edit. I won’t change mechanical or spelling errors.

    I send you an editorial letter with a summary of my comments. You will also receive a draft with my comments throughout the manuscript.

    We chat over Zoom to discuss the suggested edits and how to proceed with the draft. These are just suggestions! Take what resonates with you and leave the rest.
